All through 2026 we’re celebrating 75 years of the Australian Local Government Women’s Association.
In February, Her Excellency the Governor-General, Ms Sam Mostyn AC, became ALGWA Patron.
ALGWA President, Cr Kylie Spears, said “Her Excellency’s passion for empowering women, her advocacy for diversity and inclusion, and her remarkable achievements in both public and private sectors, embody the very values that ALGWA stands for.”
National celebrations are being held at the ALGA National General Assembly in June and at the ALGWA National Conference in August. ALGWA Tas will be represented at both, including ALGWA Tas office bearers and national delegates Mayor Dr Mary Duniam and Cr Melinda Reed.
ALGWA Tas members are contributing to a commemorative booklet to be published mid year. Member reflections will include their time in local government in Tasmania, what they value about ALGWA and advice for women candidates.
We’re also stepping up our advocacy, calling for routine reporting on women candidates and elected members as part of local government and electoral provisions – Tasmania can ‘measure what matters’ and lead the way as we look ahead to the ALGWA Tas 50th anniversary in 2028.
